The Design.

When designing the Aquatique GMT, I wanted to build on the foundation of the original Aquatique while adding a practical complication for modern travelers. The case dimensions remain faithful to the vintage-inspired proportions that define the Aquatique: a 37.4mm case diameter and 43.5mm lug-to-lug, offering the same harmonious balance of classic charm and modern comfort.

Like the original, the GMT version draws inspiration from mid-century tool watches, but with an added focus on versatility across time zones. The additional hand allows the wearer to track a second time zone with ease, making it as useful in the air as it is in the sea.

A domed sapphire bezel—taking inspiration from the iconic bakelite bezels of the past—reinforces its vintage heritage while ensuring durability for modern use.

The Aquatique GMT is built for everyday use, whether you’re traveling abroad or simply keeping track of time in another city.

The Dial.

When designing the dial for the Aquatique GMT, I wanted to preserve the character of the original Aquatique while introducing subtle updates to suit the GMT function. The goal remained the same: to balance functionality with timeless style, drawing from classic principles of legibility and aesthetic simplicity.

The Graphite version features a refined sunray dial in a dark grey tone, enhancing visual depth and ensuring excellent readability under varying light conditions. Polished triangle markers, brushed on top to reduce glare and filled with Super-LumiNova BGW9, provide clear visibility in low light. Painted numerals at 3, 9, and 12 retain the classic symmetry of the design, while the numeral at 6 has been replaced with a discreet date window for added practicality.

By removing the minute track wheel, the dial achieves a cleaner appearance while still maintaining strong legibility. The result is a design that respects the identity of the original Aquatique while adapting it for a watch made to track more than one time zone.

The Movement.

When selecting the movement for the Aquatique GMT, I followed the same principles as with the original Aquatique: quality, reliability, and long-term serviceability. It was important to choose a mechanical movement respected by both enthusiasts and watchmakers, ensuring that maintenance can be carried out by any competent watchmaker worldwide.

For the GMT version, I chose the Miyota 9075 — a true GMT movement that allows the local hour hand to be set independently of the 24-hour hand. This makes adjusting to new time zones effortless while keeping home time visible at a glance. Known for its precision, durability, and accessibility, the 9075 is a natural choice for the Aquatique GMT. With a balance wheel oscillating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, it delivers accurate timekeeping and dependable performance over the long term.

To complement the movement, the rotor has been upgraded with a custom Côtes de Genève finish.

The Crystal.

In staying true to the vintage character of the Aquatique line, the GMT version also features a top-hat sapphire crystal. This design was essential in recreating the look of 1960s tool watches, giving the dial its distinctive vintage presence and the characteristic “wobble” when viewed from the side. With its gracefully domed shape, the crystal adds a touch of nostalgia while providing modern durability, guarding against cracks and scratches for lasting clarity and appeal.

The Bezel.

The sapphire domed bezel of the Aquatique GMT is more than just a functional component, it reflects both resilience and heritage. Unlike the diver’s minute bezel of the original model, the GMT version features a 24-hour scale, allowing the wearer to track a second time zone with ease. Its two-tone design clearly separates day and night, with the darker color indicating nighttime hours and the lighter color indicating daytime.

Built with a 120-click unidirectional rotation and a ball-bearing mechanism, the bezel offers a smooth, precise feel with every turn. This combination of utility and refinement stays true to the Aquatique’s design philosophy, blending the spirit of classic tool watches with modern functionality for today’s traveler.

The luminescence.

The Aquatique GMT features Super-LumiNova® BGW9, ensuring effortless legibility in low-light conditions. The numerals on the bezel, along with the hands and applied markers on the dial, are all coated with BGW9, providing a bright and long-lasting afterglow that enhances both function and style throughout the watch’s lifetime.

The Bracelet.

When designing the bracelet for the Aquatique, I established a clear set of criteria that remain unchanged with the GMT version:

1. Stainless Steel Construction: for durability and a timeless look.

2. Quick-Fly Adjustment: essential for comfort and the ability to fine-tune the fit with ease.

3. Solid Buckle with Push Lock: ensuring secure fastening and convenience.

4. Slim Design: to complement the watch’s refined proportions.

5. Female End Links: for a seamless integration and better fit with the case.

These principles guided the creation of a five-link bracelet measuring 20mm at the lugs and tapering to 16mm, featuring a quick-fly adjustment system, a fully brushed buckle with push lock, and female end links. The result is a bracelet that delivers functionality, comfort, and style, perfectly matched to both the original Aquatique and the GMT version.
